Accidents Happen
Accidents happen and can lead to tooth damage, whether that’s getting hit by a ball during sports or biting on something hard. How do you know if it’s a dental emergency though? We want patients to know that your care and comfort is our top priority, and if you find yourself in a situation where you have tooth pain or the following symptoms, please call us right away. Keep reading to learn more. A dental problem is considered an emergency if you have the following symptoms:
- Severe pain and bleeding
- Loss of a tooth from injury or accident
- Abscess or infection in the mouth
- Facial swelling
The goal in an emergency is to get you out of pain and save any damaged teeth, if possible. The sooner we can see you, the better.
- If a tooth has been knocked out for some reason, pick it up without touching the root. Rinse it off gently and either try to place it into the tooth socket or place it in a small container of milk and bring it with you to our office.
- If your tooth has been fractured, rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to stop the swelling, and you can take acetaminophen to stop the pain until you see us.
- A dental abscess is a very serious condition and can spread to your jaw and other parts of your body. Please call our office right away if you experience a toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, and swelling in the face.
There are dental problems, however, that are not as urgent but can cause panic or anxiety, such as a small crack or chip in the tooth, lost filling or crown, or slight toothache. For these issues, we don’t need to see you right away, but will ask you to come in within a couple of days. As always, if you have any questions, please call our Frisco office, and we will be happy to help you. Until we see you again, have a great day and stay safe!
